Spring Capercaillie hunting is one of the oldest and most traditional hunting experiences in Russia. The Capercaillie, often referred to as a relic of prehistoric times, has disappeared from many parts of Europe but continues to thrive in the vast forests of Russia.
This unique hunt takes place during the breeding season when male Capercaillies gather on traditional leks and perform their famous mating songs before sunrise. The combination of ancient hunting traditions, pristine forests and the excitement of stalking a singing bird in the darkness creates an unforgettable hunting experience for every hunter.
In addition to Capercaillie, hunters may also pursue Black Grouse, another iconic European game bird known for its spectacular spring displays.

Depending on the hunting area, hunters will either travel to the Kirov region aboard the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway or be transferred by vehicle to the Tver region. Both destinations offer excellent Capercaillie and Black Grouse hunting opportunities in traditional Russian hunting areas.

This short spring season coincides with the peak mating activity of both Capercaillie and Black Grouse and offers the best opportunities for successful hunts.
Capercaillie hunting takes place before dawn when hunters carefully approach displaying birds at traditional lekking grounds. During their mating song, Capercaillie temporarily lose awareness of surrounding sounds, allowing hunters to move closer between sequences of the display.
The hunt requires patience, concentration and precise timing, making it one of the most fascinating forms of traditional European bird hunting.
Black Grouse hunting is conducted from concealed blinds positioned near active display areas. Hunters observe the spectacular mating behavior before selecting a suitable bird.
Both hunts are conducted under the guidance of experienced local professionals familiar with the birds' behavior and traditional hunting techniques.
Hunters are accommodated in hunting houses located close to the hunting grounds.
The lodges provide warm and comfortable accommodation, home-style meals and a welcoming atmosphere after early mornings spent in the forest.
